A head-on collision between an SUV and 18-wheeler on Friday about 5 miles north of Fredericksburg on US Highway 87 resulted in the death of a 22-year-old woman.
Jenica Barnard, of Fredericksburg, was killed when her 2016 Toyota Sequoia was involved in a collision with an 18-wheeler truck at 5:52 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9.
Queterio Mendoza, 23, of Dumas, the driver of the truck, was believed to have escaped injury.
Initial DPS reports state that Barnard was driving south and attempted to pass another vehicle and entered the northbound lane near the crest of a hill. The truck driver did not have time to hit brake, the report stated, and the vehicles collided.
A fire resulted from the crash, but investigators are still determining which vehicle ignited first. More information will be released when a full report is filed. DPS Trooper David Vaughan investigated.
DPS Troopers are seeking anyone who might have witnessed the accident. Persons with information may call the Gillespie County Law Enforcement Center at 997-7585.
Funeral arrangements for Barnard are pending. She was the wife of Fredericksburg ISD band percussion instructor Brandt Barnard.
