Finding more to life than problems” is the motto for Stewart Counseling, a counseling and workplace center.
Owner Chris Stewart grew up working alongside his father, the late clinical psychologist Dr. G. Keith Stewart, specifically working with kids.
After moving to the Hill Country in 2011, Stewart saw a need for bringing mental health services and resources to Fredericksburg.
“I wanted to expand my growing skills in the clinical, mental health area and I moved up here and eventually started my own practice,” Stewart said.
While mental health can be a touchy topic, it is something that is ever present in this day in age.
“You can’t see that someone has mental health needs. We all look the same on the outside but people in our community are struggling,” Stewart said.
Stewart says in the last few years, counseling has changed from narrowing down to the problems to now showing clients that there is much more that is right in their lives than wrong.
“We want to introduce people to their greatest potential and not just identify problem after problem,” Stewart said. “We are going to find out what is right and help you create a better life.”
Counseling options
Stewart Counseling allows counselors to start up their practices and establish themselves in the Hill Country.
“The client base is growing and I want to give these counselors a space to service their community,” he said.
Stewart puts his focus on children and adolescents, as well as needs such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, family life adjustments and life transitions.
“I frequently serve families coping with transitions like divorce and deployment, as well as providing co-parenting sessions for arbitration,” Stewart said. “If a family moves here and their child has issues transitioning in school, I am going to help with that.”
Dr. Jenny Moores puts her focus on women and children, especially those who have experienced physical and sexual abuse. She conducts evaluations and designs treatment plans for her patients to facilitate therapy.
She uses “play therapy” to help children who struggle to articulate with words or show emotions.
Shannon Kelly specializes in substance abuse disorders and community outreach. She practices Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectal Behavioral Therapy.
Providing services from a nursing side, is Elizabeth Parker, RN.
“There are growing medical and mental health needs in this community and we want to recognize those needs that are underserved,” Stewart said.
Parker acts as an education and liaison in communicating with caregivers, as well as navigating future health care needs.
The group also has access to resources beyond what is available in Fredericksburg, whether that be hospitalization or connecting a person with a physician.
“We have had a lot of success networking with other healthcare professionals in the community to get people the help they need,” he said. “We are going to safely take them where they are, and get them where they need to be.”
Alternative therapy
For those that don’t like sitting in an office one-on-one with a counselor, the counselors at Stewart Counseling provide different treatment and therapy options.
They provide online therapy, family therapy, healthcare advising, team workshops as well as workplace and leadership coaching.
“Our online therapy provides a private and secure way to meet our clients’ needs, no matter where they are,” Stewart said.
Stewart suggests visiting www.stewartcounselingtx.com to find the best service, counselor and therapy options.
Office space
In addition to providing counseling services, Stewart Counseling has office space for rent for those who travel and need office space in Fredericksburg or for those looking to start their own counseling business.
