Greg Shrader, former publisher of the Kerrville Daily Times, on Friday was inducted into the Texas Newspaper Foundation Hall of Fame.
Shrader, is a current board member of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation in Fredericksburg, along with numerous Kerrville organizations, including the Kerrville Economic Development Corporation, United Way and others.
“For nearly 50 years, Greg has touched the lives of so many,” said Pat Canty, publisher at the Odessa American, who presented the award. “Teacher, mentor, publisher, community servant: He has done it all and continues to do so. And the fruits of his labor — his passion — have added so much value to our industry and to this world.”
Current Daily Times Publisher Carlina Villalpando-Daugherty began her career at the Daily Times as an intern, saying Shrader took time to offer encouragement and advice.
Shrader continues to write occasional pieces for the Daily Times.
“To be recognized by your peers is always the best,” Shrader said in his acceptance speech. “Newspapering isn’t a business; it is a necessity to a free society.”
During his career, Shrader also served as a leader at the Bryan-College Station Eagle, the Galveston County Daily Times, and newspapers in La Marque and Lufkin.
Shrader joins the late Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post publisher Art Kowert in the hall. J.W. (Bill) Cooke, father of current Standard-Radio Post publisher Ken Esten Cooke, also was inducted into the hall.
The hall is for those considered industry visionaries, innovators and community builders.
