Gillespie County voters spoke with a mostly unified voice on Election Day and during early voting to send a Republican slate of candidates to local and statewide offices.
Election results were completed at about 5:30 a.m. by County Clerk Lindsey Brown and her staff, who stepped in to fill election administrator office vacancies.
In the three contested area races, Jan Davis won the battle of write-in candidates for District Clerk. She finished with 3,790 votes (52.07%), while challengers April Wilke had 2,810 votes (38.61%) and Tara Burrer finished with 678 votes (9.32%).
Dana Smith handily won the County Treasurer’s race, finishing with 10,933 votes (92.43%) to challenger Terry D. Hamilton’s 895 votes (7.57%).
And in the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 4, race, Republican Todd Metzger won with 2,835 votes (83.6%) to Democratic challenger Jerry Sotello’s 556 votes (16.4%).
All results are unofficial until canvassing takes place at a later date.
Statewide races
By a nearly four-to-one margin, Gillespie County voters also chose the Republican slate of incumbents and new candidates in statewide races.
In the District 24 State Senator race, Republican Pete Flores will take office after defeating Democrat Kathy Jones-Hospod by a large margin. Flores polled 82.11% of the vote in Gillespie County (10,844) to 17.89% for Jones-Hospod (2,363).
Ellen Troxclair will be the new State Representative for Gillespie County as she defeated Democrat Pam Baggett by a margin of 10,789 (81.74%) to 2,410 (18.26%) in Gillespie County. The new District 19 now includes Burnet, Blanco and Kendall counties, along with Gillespie.
Former District 24 State Senator Dawn Buckingham, who represented Gillespie County, won her statewide race for Commissioner of the General Land Office of Texas. In Gillespie County, she outpolled Democratic challenger Jay Kleberg by 10,882 (82%) to 2,273 (17.13%). Other challengers Alfred Molison Jr. and Carrie Evelyn Menger had less than 1% of the votes.
U.S. Congress
Chip Roy will continue to represent U.S. Congressional District 21, after winning that vote over Democrat Claudia Andreana Zapata. Counties in that district now include Gillespie, Comal, Blanco, part of Bexar, Bandera, part of Hays, part of Travis, along with Kendall, Kerr and Real counties.
Gillespie County vote totals showed Roy easily outpacing Zapata by a margin of 10,879 (82.09%) to 2,373 (17.91%).
Harper ISD
Harper Independent School District had five candidates positioning for four school trustee seats.
Results Tuesday morning showed the vote count as:
