In 1965, Aase Haugen boarded a ship in Rotterdam, Netherlands and made her way to New York City. Haugen had been accepted as a student in a foreign exchange student program by American Field Service, an organization that is still in business today.

“I was informed (about) the AFS program through school,” said Haugen. “And I think I was the type of girl that really wanted to try it.

“I lived in a small town called Aludal in Norway.”
