Texas Wine Auction and Frontera Healthcare have teamed up to bring accessible healthcare and mental health services to hospitality workers in the Hill Country.
The “Wellness Uncorked” event, was held Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Texas Wine Collective, and was presented by Texas Wine Revolution.
Texas Wine Revolution is a 501(c)3 non-profit, and Frontera Healthcare, a 501(c)3 non-profit, aimed to provide service industry workers with much health and wellness services.
The event welcomed a number of individuals from local wineries, breweries and country clubs. Frontera medical providers were on hand to provide free blood pressure and blood glucose checks, as well as a behavioral health provider to administer and assess questionnaires for signs of depression and anxiety.
These assessments showed several individuals with elevated scores on the anxiety and depression surveys, proving the need for further intervention from Frontera’s behavioral health director, Dr. Richard Amiss. Amiss was then able to provide individuals with information regarding stress management, mental wellness, and self-care, as well as information for future therapy with a Frontera therapist. It was also found that many participants had elevated blood pressure, and therefore were given instructions for further action to take control of it.
“This event was the first of many planned for this partnership, to ensure hospitality workers get the care they need,” said a spokesperson for the event.”
The events are open to all workers in the hospitality/ service industry and services provided at the events by Frontera Healthcare are free to participants.
“This industry helps keep Fredericksburg, and the surrounding communities thriving, and is often overlooked,” the spokesperson explained. “Due to the nature of the industry, hospitality workers often work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate the needs of guests visiting at any time. Their jobs are very physical, and employees are on their feet for most of their shift with very little time to serve their basic needs including proper nutrition and self-care.”
“As many of these businesses are small, they are unable to provide health insurance for employees, making affordable access to healthcare that much more challenging,” the spokesperson said. “Texas Wine Auction saw this need and took action to ensure these workers are also being cared for.”
